Being a Leader requires constant practice to build and enhance their Leadership Presence. Enhanced Leadership Presence enables them to exert influence on others beyond that’s conferred by formal authority.

Working with a range of Leaders over the past 18+ years, I’ve had many insights on Leadership Presence – some of which am sharing here:

1. Being Present, Curious, Authentic, Consistent, Trustworthy, Resolute and Resilient significantly contributes to building and enhancing one’s Leadership Presence.
2. Leadership is about being decisive, and taking decisions in-time. A recent survey found, among CEOs fired over issues related to decision making, only a third lost their jobs due to bad decisions; the rest were ousted for being indecisive. Taking decisions and keep moving at the right pace is crucial for a Leader.
3. Leadership is about getting the priorities right. It’s easier said than done though. Getting the priorities right requires a Leader to simplify, chase clarity, and draw insights that are relevant. This requires enhanced Leadership presence.
4. In a way, leadership is about moving from A to B – moving from where they are to where they want to be / decides to be. Also, getting their people to move from A to B – getting the people also to move from where they are to where they need to be, where they have never been to!
5. Being curious, being open is considered one of the most desired leadership attributes of current times. Invariably this leads to eliciting diverse, complex, conflicting views and information. This calls for leaders being able to interpret what they see and hear. And draw insights. The impactful leaders are those, who can interpret, and draw insights from the plethora of information that they are bombarded with.
6. Leadership is about getting people to be their best versions. As a Leader, when one is the best version of oneself, they are likely to get the people around also to be their best versions. One of the ways to bring about the best is to ask the question ‘Is this the best that we can be, is this the best that we could do at this point in time?’.
